Example of a rare type of cosmetic ear surgery intended to reduce the actual size of the upper auricle. This condition, known as macrotia, involves an overly developed upper one half of the ear. Ear reduction surgery was performed to create a smaller looking ear. This was done by removing excess cartilage (not by pinning the ear closer to the head). This type of surgery is also referred to as scapha or scaphoid reduction of the ear. If you compare the before and after surgery photos, you can appreciate how the ear is now smaller from top to bottom as well as from front to back. In this particular case, you can also see how the upper portion of the ear does not appear as ‘pointed’ as it once did.
